These two sides have a slight advantage in that they will know exactly what they need to do qualify before the game commences given everyone else plays on Saturday. Most likely it will pretty simply be a case of the winner progresses and the loser goes out and that will give it a genuine cup tie feel.

These sides will meet in the Championship this term following Dundee United’s relegation last season but the Tannadice club will be happy with how their League Cup campaign is shaping up. They started in unconvincing fashion with a 1-1 draw and penalty shoot-out win at Arbroath but they’ve since hammered Cowdenbeath 6-1 with Simon Murray netting a hat-trick and they followed that up with another 1-1 draw and shoot-out success, this time away at top flight Inverness.

As a result Dundee United head into the weekend in 2nd place, 1 point better off than Dunfermline who have beaten the two lower league clubs 3-0 but suffered a crushing 5-1 home defeat to Caley Thistle on Tuesday. Andy Geggan briefly levelled the game for them but Inverness ran riot in the Second Half and Athletic will come into this game with their pride and confidence severely dented.

They will want a much improved showing here, not just to try and stay in the competition but to get back on track ahead of the Championship opener next weekend against Dumbarton. Given their defensive issues though and given Dundee United hit 6 on this ground only last weekend, goals seem likely here and most of them for the home side. Dundee United are yet to keep a clean sheet in the competition though so the visitors could get some joy too and both teams have scored in all of Dundee United’s last 8 matches.

Therefore this has the potential to be a really good game and backing over 2.5 goals at 4/5 looks to offer real value.
