Europa FC can make life hard for Zalgiris

Lithuania’s Kauno Zalgiris make the trip to Gibraltar on Thursday for a Europa Conference League qualifier against Europa FC.

Zalgiris were only formed in 2004 and reached the top flight in Lithuania in 2015.  They secured a best-ever finish with third place domestically last season and are involved in European qualifying for the third successive campaign, having fallen at the first round of Europa League qualification in each of the last two seasons.

Europa FC have competed in either Champions League or Europa League qualifying in each of the last seven seasons and have enjoyed some success.  The Green Machine overcame Andorra’s Sant Julian over two legs in the 2019-20 season and then held Poland’s Legia Warsaw to a draw in home leg in the next round before ultimately falling to a 3-0 aggregate loss.

This will be Europa’s first competitive match since May but Zalgiris have been competing in the Lithuanian top flight.  The visitors are winless in their last four games domestically but remain well placed and are just four points off the top of the table.

Europa are unbeaten in their last three home European qualifiers and they can make a contest of this tie by grabbing a draw on Thursday.  Rafa Escobar’s men have a mean defensive record at their Victoria Stadium home and have conceded just six goals in their last 11 games, we’re expecting them to set up to defend against Zalgiris and 0-0 stands out in the correct score market.
