Wales 2-1 @ 9/1

Reason For Finland vs Wales Predictions

  • Finland have scored in nine consecutive matches.
  • Wales have scored in each of their last six games, remaining unbeaten throughout.
  • Wales have won four of their last six matches, while Finland have lost three of their last five.

Inexperienced Finland make the step up

Finland qualified for their first ever major international tournament last year thanks to an excellent Euro 2020 qualifying run, and while they may have to wait until next summer for that maiden appearance they will be hoping to continue that vein of form into the second iteration of the UEFA Nations League.

The first instalment of this competition saw Finland promoted to League B after topping a group including Hungary, Greece and Estonia, but the going is likely to be tougher this time around as they face Bulgaria, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

As far as squad selection goes there have been few surprises sprung on us. They take to the field in Helsinki spearheaded by top scorer Teemu Pukki, while veteran midfielder Tim Sparv captains the team and the excellent Lukas Hradecky cuts an imposing figure between the sticks.

Dragons aim for Nations League promotion

Wales are without Ashley Williams, Aaron Ramsey, David Brooks and Joe Allen for these Nations League tie, but Ryan Giggs still has plenty of talent to call his own. Gareth Bale returns from his exile in Madrid to provide most of the attacking threat, while up and coming stars like Ben Woodburn, Daniel James and Ethan Ampadu will be hoping to make their mark.

The Dragons burst onto the European scene in 2016 with their fantastic run to the semi-finals in their first major finals since 1958, and they built on that success by qualifying for the postponed Euro 2020 tournament last year.

Their Nations League campaign wasn’t quite so successful as they were ousted to the top spot by Denmark, but this year’s group looks a lot more winnable.

Goals at both ends expected in Helsinki

That being said, without Williams in defence they could struggle to keep the determined Finns at bay, especially since the hosts have scored in nine consecutive matches. They haven’t failed to score on home turf since March 2018, but have shown their own vulnerabilities against the likes of Italy, Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Indeed, the visitors shouldn’t have many issues breaking through the Finland defence. They have scored in six consecutive matches now and are unbeaten since June 2019, so backing both teams to score looks a good value offering on Thursday.

Wales have won four of their last six games and, while improving, Finland still aren’t quite at their level. The hosts have lost three of their last five and have lost by a 2-1 scoreline three times since the start of 2019. Wales have scored exactly two goals in three of their last six, so we’re opting for a 2-1 correct score prediction.
