Tip Reasoning

  • Juventus are unbeaten in 12 league games, winning eight during that run.
  • Juve have the third-best defensive record in Serie A, conceding just 22 goals this term.
  • Torino have only won two of their 11 away games, scoring a league-low six goals on their travels.

Turin derby an opportunity for Juve to increase gap

Despite being comprehensively outplayed at top-four rivals Atalanta last weekend, Juventus stretched their unbeaten run to 12 Serie A games, courtesy of Danilo’s last-gasp equaliser. Juve have won eight and drawn four during that run, and a victory over local rivals Torino would give them a five-point cushion over fifth place, albeit having played two games more.

The omens all look good for the Old Lady. They are, remarkably, unbeaten in 15 games against their cross-city rivals, and have lost just one of the last 33 head-to-head meetings, a run which stretches all the way back to 1995. Meanwhile, when adjusted for points per game, only Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli have better home records than Juve in Serie A this season.

Although Torino have been in decent form of late, lifting themselves into the top half of the table, they have a horrendous away record. Torino have only won two of their 11 away league games, and have only hit the net six times on the road all season, by far the worst record in the league. They have been shut out in two of their last three away matches, which doesn’t bode well against a Juventus defence which has only been breached eight times at the Allianz Stadium this term.

Back hosts for a shutout win

With all of that in mind, it seems impossible to back anything other than a Juventus win, and clean sheet, against a Torino side which travels poorly. Ivan Juric’s team have only beaten Sampdoria and Sassuolo on the road all season, and went on a run of four consecutive away shutout losses earlier this season.

While Massimiliano Allegri’s men should continue their hunt for Champions League football, they will have to work hard to break Torino down; Il Toro have Serie A’s fourth-best defensive record this season, so a repeat of October’s 1-0 Bianconeri win could be a decent correct score prediction.
