Lazio vs Roma Predictions
- Lazio have kept four consecutive clean sheets in Serie A, recording six shutouts in their last eight in all competitions.
- Roma, meanwhile, have recorded five clean sheets in their last seven games.
- Lazio and Roma are two of just four Serie A teams to concede less than a goal per game this season – the Biancocelesti have conceded just 19 goals in 26 games.
High stakes for Derby della Capitale
It promises to be an exhilarating end to the season for football fans in Rome, with both of the capital city’s clubs in contention for a top-four finish in Serie A. Third-placed Lazio are just two points clear of Roma in fifth after both teams – as well as competitors Inter and Milan – dropped points last week. As ever, there has been little love lost between the teams this season, but both have seen greater fireworks on the sidelines than in the goalmouth recently.
Lazio were dumped out of the Europa Conference League by AZ Alkmaar in midweek – much to the jubilation of Roma boss Jose Mourinho, who will be absent from the touchline as he completes his two-game ban. Maurizio Sarri’s sides are known for their enterprising style, but Lazio’s big strength this term has been their defence – only Napoli have conceded fewer than their 19 Serie A goals against. The Biancocelesti have kept four clean sheets in a row in the league, and six shutouts in their last eight matches overall.
Roma have been equally solid of late – with one notable exception. The Giallorossi suffered a madcap 4-3 defeat to Sassuolo last time out in Serie A, before Thursday’s goalless draw with Real Sociedad took them into the Europa League quarter-finals. The Giallorossi have kept five clean sheets in their last seven games, with four of those shutouts coming at the Stadio Olimpico home they share with Lazio. Roma are themselves one of just four Serie A teams to concede fewer than a goal per game this season, and they will back themselves to keep things tight.
Classic not expected in Rome – do Lazio have the edge?
With both Rome clubs possessing strong defensive records and being involved in several low-scoring affairs of late, we’re opposing both teams to score ahead of a game in which the defences may be on top, particularly given the high stakes.
Meanwhile, with Lazio unbeaten in four league games, a run in which they won at Napoli, a repeat of November’s 1-0 derby win for the Biancocelesti is our correct score selection.
