Parisians primed to retain Super Cup

Just days after beating Aston Villa in the Uefa Super Cup, Europe’s best side, Paris Saint-Germain, will get another opportunity for some silverware in Sunday’s French Super Cup. 

The Parisians have been worthy Champions League victors two years running and they have avoided the cardinal sin of standing still by staying busy in the transfer market, suggesting they should have no issues making it two trophies in a week. 

Enrique could have been forgiven for resting on his laurels but he deserves credit for shaking things up, allowing second-string players Goncalo Ramos and Kang-In Lee to depart and splashing the cash on exciting youngster Maghnes Akliouche.

Ousmane Dembele, Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi are among the Parisians stars who enjoyed a strong World Cup and the strength of their squad cannot be underestimated, with the likes of Ibrahim Mbaye and Senny Mayulu capable of making valuable contributions. 

Lens likely to struggle following mass exodus 

The Blood and Gold did immensely well to challenge the Parisians for a long time last term, eventually finishing just six points off the summit, and their French Cup triumph capped off an excellent season. 

However, manager Pierre Sage has left for Crystal Palace and their two best midfielders, Mamadou Sangare and Adrien Thomasson, have also moved on, so regression is likely. 

New manager Dino Toppmoller represents a risk. His attacking tactics can lead to some beautiful football but his Frankfurt side conceded an average of 1.51 goals per game and he was sacked in January. 

Even when at their best, Lens couldn’t find a way past PSG, losing both of last season’s meetings 2-0, so it is hard to see this version of them stopping the French champions.
