Luton to Win

Reason for tip

Luton have won two of their last three home league games and scored eight goals across that run. Sunderland, meanwhile, have lost three of their last five away league contests, conceding two goals in each of their last three. The Black Cats are also the only Championship club yet to score from a set piece and are weak at defending them too.

Luton 2-0

Reason for tip

Luton have scored ten times in their last four home games and kept two clean sheets in their last four matches overall. Sunderland, who are still without the services of their two main strikers, went down 2-0 at Blackburn on their last away trip and it could happen again.

Hatters need to have their heads screwed on again

Luton can exploit weaknesses in Sunderland’s make-up to take all three points when the two mid-table Championship clubs meet at Kenilworth Road on Saturday. The Hatters lost the heads in a 4-0 defeat to rivals Watford last time out with Gabriel Osho given his marching orders late on and four other Luton players booked.

Nathan Jones will expect to see a reaction to that loss when he sends his team out to face a Black Cats side that has lost three of their last five on the road this weekend. Tony Mowbray’s men were two goals up after 45 minutes of their home game with Burnley last week, but fell apart after the break to lose 4-2.

The key goal that allowed Burnley to get a foothold in the match came from a corner and was the sixth set-piece effort Sunderland have conceded this term – the joint-third highest in the division. Yet they are even worse at converting set-plays at the other end and now stand out as the only club in the division yet to register from a corner or free kick in 2022-23.

Sunderland struggling for goals without strikers

Luton do not lack firepower from both closed and open play situations, having notched ten goals in their last four home games. Two of those matches were won and two were drawn, but they were in position to take all three points in all of them. Going up against a side with such a moderate recent away record, the obvious pick here is for a Luton win at a shade of odds-on.

An alternative way in could be to back the Hatters to score two goals or more, which they have been doing frequently, but we will keep it simple here and put our faith in the hosts to seal it up. Luton have kept two clean sheets in their last four matches, which indicates a 2-0 win could be possible.

Sunderland, who are still without the services of their two main strikers, went down 2-0 at Blackburn on their last away trip and it could happen again.
