Reason For Lyon vs Strasbourg Predictions

  • Lyon have won five of their last six home matches but played in midweek and face a Strasbourg side with four wins in their last six away days.
  • Both sides have kept three clean sheets in their last ten matches.
  • Over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of Strasbourg’s last six matches, nine of Lyon’s last eleven and in four of the last five clashes between these sides.

Strasbourg love their away days

Strasbourg endured a tough start to the campaign but have finally started to rally and currently sit sixth which is a testament to their fantastic resilience and general quality throughout the squad. They’ve won six of their last eight games in Ligue 1 with last week’s 3-0 demolition of one of the division’s best defences, Reims, being particularly impressive. They’ve scored 15 goals in this time with seven going in at the other end and while Thierry Laurey will be uneasy regarding the lack of clean sheets, their exciting front line is currently enough to carry them forward.

Unlike other teams, Strasbourg have managed to so far replicate their performances on the road as they’ve won four of their last six matches away from home. They had a nightmare 5-0 defeat in Brest during this period but apart from that outlier they have been relatively solid at the back with just two conceded in the other five games. The Alsatians won their last trip to Lyon so may be feeling confident about themselves here.

Lyon excellent at home

Lyon had a massive Coupe de France quarter-final on Wednesday against Marseille. It was made all the more special given the opponents but Lyon managed to ride the storm and came out 1-0 winners via a late Houssem Aouar strike, the player has been in fine form recently with six direct goal contributions in his last ten games. As much as the progression to the semis is massive for Rudi Garcia and his men, it was a whirlwind 90 minutes and fatigue could play a part here as it was pretty much a full strength eleven in midweek.

Lyon will be helped by their home crowd here though as their performances at the Groupama have been excellent as of late. They have five wins and a draw in their last six games in all competitions with 13 goals scored in this time. They have kept clean sheets in each of their last three in Lyon but two of these were against relegation battling Toulouse and Amiens. Against better teams like Lille, Leipzig, Rennes and Nice they have struggled to keep it as tight at the back.

An exciting clash on the cards?

This has been a rather close fixture in recent years with both sides getting the better of the other. Lyon do have their great home support but Strasbourg thrive away from home so we’re expecting another tight match here. With the hosts having less days to recover, we doubt they’ll keep up their incredible home form but we do see them getting the point here against the Alsatians. This match finished 2-2 in March in we’re backing that scoreline again here as both sides are enjoying their football but lack solidity at the back. We’re also backing over 2.5 goals to be scored as this market has won in five of Strasbourg’s last six matches, nine of Lyon’s last eleven and in four of the last five clashes between these sides.
