      Mainz vs Hertha Berlin Predictions

Mainz 05 climbed back up to fifth place after their dominating 3-1 win against relegation struggling Stuttgart last Saturday. Mainz have guaranteed themselves Europa League football next season with their seven-point cushion on eight-placed Wolfsburg, despite their generally average form over recent weeks (W1 D2 L2). Mainz have exceeded their expectations since the opening of the season and though mathematically still capable of qualifying for Champions League football next season – they trail Borussia Monchengladbach by 3 points and 11 on goal difference – Mainz will be content to secure themselves direct qualification into the group stages of the Europa League.

Hertha Berlin come into this match with the second worst form (D1 L4) in the Bundesliga after last Saturday’s unexpected 2-1 defeat at home to Darmstadt 98. No fixture is “easy” in the Bundesliga, but even with their poor current form, Berlin’s strong home record favoured the hosts and they will be disappointed to have taken nothing from this one. The tougher reality for Hertha Berlin to face is that this defeat was their fifth in six Bundesliga matches and consequently Hertha have now dropped down to sixth place, despite occupying third place with a decent cushion of points above the rest of the pack for large chunk of the season. Bayer Leverkusen secured themselves third place and now Borussia M’gladbach have leapfrogged Berlin to (all but certainly) secure themselves the fourth, and last, Champions League qualification spot. Settling for sixth place and the UEFA Europa League after an otherwise unbelievable season is going to be bittersweet for Hertha.

With Hertha Berlin being so out-of-form it’s difficult to not call Mainz the “favourite”, particularly after a dominating performance against Stuttgart last Saturday. Hertha Berlin have seemed nervous all over the pitch in recent weeks and most notably their defence, which was praised to be one of the most consistent in the Bundesliga earlier this season, seems to have suffered the most under pressure. Mainz are in decent goal scoring form, scoring an average of 1.5 goals per game over their last four matches, and Hertha Berlin have conceded at least two goals in each of their last seven matches across all competitions. Combining the current form of both sides with the statistics below, we expect Mainz to end Hertha’s season with disappointment and win this final Bundesliga match of the 2015/2016 campaign. Using the average goals per game from both sides Mainz 05 to win 2-0 at 8/1 also seems a top value bet.
