Ukraine to Win and Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Malta have lost their last five Euro 2024 qualifiers and their last six home qualifiers overall. They have failed to score at home in Group C defeats to Italy, England and North Macedonia with two of those losses seeing fewer than three goals scored. Meanwhile, Ukraine have not scored more than two goals in their last four internationals and only beat Malta 1-0 at ‘home’.

Ukraine 2-0

Reason for tip

It would be a major surprise if Malta, who have scored only once in their last six home qualifiers and that was an own goal in a 7-1 defeat to Croatia, got on the scoresheet here. Two of their three previous losses in the group were by 2-0 scorelines and Ukraine arrive fresh from beating North Macedonia by the same score.

  • Malta have failed to score in their last five Euro 2024 qualifiers, all defeats
  • Ukraine have not scored more than two goals in their last four internationals and only beat Malta 1-0 at ‘home’

Ukraine lack striker of Rebrov’s class

Ukraine should keep the pressure on the top two in Group C by clinching a routine win in Malta on Tuesday night.

Serhiy Rebrov’s side did a professional job in seeing off North Macedonia in Prague on Saturday, although it took until the 95th minute before all three points were fully assured.

Ukraine’s problem is that they do not have a goalscorer approaching the calibre of their current coach, who formed a feared partnership with Andriy Shevchenko for the Blue and Yellow in the early 2000s.

Visitors unlikely to steamroller the Reds

Rebrov has stated he will rotate players in for this game, which could mean central striker Artem Dovbyk is benched after failing to score for an eighth appearance in a row.

Mikhailo Mudryk is also struggling for form and Ukraine really don’t look in the sort of shape to steamroller opponents even as lowly as Malta right now.

The Reds have scored only once in their last six home qualifiers and that was an own goal in a 7-1 defeat to Croatia. A Ukraine win to nil is likely as long as they find a breakthrough, but backing the visitors to win with fewer than three goals in the game makes as much sense with greater rewards.
