Tip Reasoning

  • Both teams have scored in six of Benfica’s last eight away league contests.
  • Maritimo held Porto and Sporting to 1-1 draws at home earlier this season.
  • Maritimo have scored in three of their last four clashes with Benfica.

Time for Benfica backers to run for cover

Benfica continue to frustrate their odds-on backers and delight their odds-against takers this season and it may prove to be the case again on Saturday if Maritimo can maintain a recent trend against ‘big three’ opponents. The Greatest of the Islands held both Porto and Sporting to 1-1 draws earlier this season and come into this clash off the back of two encouraging displays.

Vasco Seabra’s side thrashed Boavista 4-0 a fortnight ago and had the better of a 2-2 draw with Santa Clara last weekend – plus they will be boosted for the visit of the Eagles by the returns from suspension of top scorer Joel Tagueu and midfielder Iván Rossi.

This could be a good time to play the Lisbon giants as decisions are being made on more than half of an underachieving squad that could be gutted in the summer to make way for new boss Roger Schmidt’s recruitment drive. As Aguias cannot realistically catch Sporting in second or be caught by Braga for third place, so there’s really little in it for a Benfica squad that could probably do without the 1200-mile round-trip to Funchal.

Set sail for BTTS in Funchal

They were denied a home win against Famalicao by an outstanding goalkeeping performance last weekend, but their strikers’ inability to score at least once there will be a concern to anyone taking the 8/15 about a Benfica win this Saturday. Maritimo have lost three of their last four home league games, so we won’t be setting sail with the hosts in double chance betting, but backing both teams to score does appeal.

Benfica have conceded in seven of their last ten road games in the league while Maritimo have scored in three of their last four games against the Eagles, so we would be confident enough about the hosts hitting the net. The worry here is that Benfica could put in a performance that is either lethargic or be so wound up by the hosts that they lose their rag and finish short-handed.

But with the most away goals of any side in the Primeira to their name, we have to believe Benfica will add to that tally at Estádio dos Barreiros. Benfica thrashed Maritimo 7-1 at the Luz earlier this season, but they could receive their comeuppance in this if they don’t turn up ready to battle for every ball, so we believe the value could lie in backing the hosts to prevail by 2-1.
