Maritimo vs Benfica Predictions
- Benfica have covered a -1 goal handicap in six of their last seven away matches.
- Maritimo have lost their last three games to Benfica by a combined score of 13-1.
- Benfica have won four of their last seven away games 2-0.
Battling Maritimo may go under against Benfica
Benfica’s brilliance was again on show at Estadio da Luz in midweek and if they show just a little bit of that Champions League sparkle, then it will be lights out for Maritimo in Sunday’s Primeira Liga contest. Roger Schmidt’s side have now won nine of their last ten games in all competitions and nothing appears to be standing in their way of clinching silverware this season.
The Eagles’ only league defeat this term came in the game that restarted the competition for them after the World Cup, since when they have won eight of nine and kept seven clean sheets.
It is fair to assume they will take three points back to Lisbon from this trip to Funchal, where Maritimo have lost both of their home games against the other two clubs inside the top three this year. Jose Gomes’ side are a little more ambitious than they were earlier in the campaign and scored three at home to Santa Clara on their last home assignment, but should not be able to hold Benfica’s fearsome forward line in check.
Eagles can ease to another 2-0 victory
Hence, the best play here is to back the visitors to cover a -1 goal handicap – as they have done in six of their last seven away matches. Benfica have won ten of their last 12 games in all competitions by a margin of greater than a goal.
It’s also worth mentioning at this point that Maritimo have suffered 7-1 and 5-0 defeats at the Luz in the last two seasons and, although they lost only 1-0 in the corresponding fixture last term, they battened down the hatches after going a goal down after two minutes.
A 2-0 away win is the only sensible course of action in correct score betting as Benfica have won four of their last seven matches by that scoreline while Maritimo conceded exactly two goals in both of their recent home clashes with Porto and Braga.
