Marseille vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions
- Tottenham can seal top spot in the group with a win
- The visitors came from 2-0 down to beat Bournemouth on Saturday
- Marseille are winless in their last four, losing three
- The hosts have lost seven of their last nine clashes with English opposition
Wide open group
Group D is one of the most wide-open groups left in this season’s Champions League, with all four sides heading into the final day with a chance to progress. Not only that but, despite currently sitting bottom, Marseille can still top the group if results go their way.
Tottenham know that a point will take them through given that the two sides directly behind them go head-to-head. However, a victory would see Spurs through in top spot and potentially land them an easier tie in the next round.
Tall order for hosts
Marseille are winless in their last nine games against English sides in the Champions League, losing seven of those matches. Their chances to turning things around this week don’t look great, despite keeping things tight in the reverse fixture.
The hosts have gone four games without a win heading into this weekend, losing three of those. They looked to be back on track in their trip to Strasbourg at the weekend, but a collapse at 2-0 up saw L’OM drop two vital points in Ligue 1’s Champions League chase.
With three defeats in five European games this term, the home side do look a little overwhelmed against a Spurs side who are back on the up.
Spurs to seal first place
Tottenham rallied from 2-0 down at the weekend to beat Bournemouth 3-2 in a vital win. That result came days after Spurs were denied a late winner against Sporting Lisbon, so I expect morale to be high in the visitors’ camp. Given Marseille’s form and record against English sides, an away win looks good value.
In terms of a goalscorer, the standout value lies with the home side. Former Arsenal man Matteo Guendouzi would surely love a goal against Spurs, while he’s scored three times across his last eight games. All three of those goals have come from starting in an attacking midfield role and he’s set to played in an advanced position this week.
While I can see Guendouzi striking for Marseille, I’m still siding with the visitors and a 2-1 victory looks like good value considering that Spurs have seen BTTS land in their last three.
