Nantes vs Brest Predictions

Two of Ligue 1’s midtable sides meet in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France on Friday evening when Nantes play host to Brest.

Tougher test for Nantes

The hosts breezed into this round of the competition as they overcame lower league opposition and they’re also coming off the back of their first league win of the New Year, as they edged a six-goal thriller against lowly Lorient in front of their own fans. They can consider themselves extremely fortunate to be here though given that they had to win a penalty shootout against second-tier side Sochaux. A loss there would have seen them exit this competition at the third-round stage for the second year in a row.

Brest have already been handed a 3-1 defeat by Nantes this season and they’ll be keen to avoid a repeat of that one. But the omen’s don’t necessarily look good for Michel Der Zakarian’s men as the last four meetings have seen them lose and concede at least three goals in the process. Les Pirates had to overcome much sterner opposition to reach this stage as they triumphed 3-0 over an extremely poor Bordeaux side which resulted in them claiming a spot in the last 16 for the first time since 2015.

Goals in abundance to be expected

We think that there will once again be goals in this fixture. It doesn’t seem to matter what competition these two meet, goals are usually inevitable and so we think there will be at least three here. Brest are conceding over a goal per away game in the league but they are also scoring an average of at least one goal per game. This should be an exciting encounter and we’d favour Nantes to be the more likely of the two to win.
