PEC’s 2021 home campaign to end on a whimper

This is the final home league game of 2021 for PEC Zwolle and they look set to have a nightmare before Christmas as they welcome the most in form side in the Eredivisie across the last five rounds, Twente.

The defensive solidity of rock-bottom Zwolle has not been the issue as they have conceded fewer goals than seventh-placed Cambuur – it is their inability to break sides down.

Only five sides in Eredivisie history had scored fewer than Zwolle’s return of eight goals at this stage of a season and none since Excelsior in 1972/73! This in itself indicates how poor the hosts have been this term.

Terrific Twente should kick on

The visitors are enjoying their finest 16-game start to an Eredivisie campaign since 2013/14. Even so, they must win here if they are to guarantee that they will remain in the play-off picture come the end of this round.

Twente should be confident of coming away with the points here after going unbeaten in five of their last six away games (W4, D1, L1) – a run in which they accrued all of their road points this term.

All in all, I predict that Twente will come out on top in a workmanlike 2-1 victory, at great value to boot. The only reason that I give the hosts a goal is that they have not been kept from scoring in any of the last 11 home H2Hs.
