Preston vs Reading Predictions

  • Both teams have not scored in six of the last seven Preston league games.
  • Both teams have not scored in three of the last five Reading away Championship matches.
  • Preston have not conceded a goal in their last four Championship matches.

Lowe expectations for goals at Preston

No Championship team has conceded fewer goals in their last eight games than Preston and a visit from a Reading side without a win in 11 league games is unlikely to alter that. Ryan Lowe has done more than just stopped the rot since taking over at Deepdale on December with his team showing playoff form over the last two months to move up from 19th to 11th in the table.

North End still don’t score enough goals to truly convince as a fringe promotion contender, but they have become hard to beat and very hard to score against.

Reading fans will look at Preston’s situation and wonder what could have been had they sacked Veljko Paunovic earlier this winter. The Royals have lost eight and drawn three of their last 11 Championship games to sink to 21st position and could enter the drop zone if results go against them this weekend.

Both teams not to score looks a valid play

PNE should win this contest and backers are unlikely to be dissuaded by the odds on quite given the Royals’ shocking run of form. But it’s worth noting that Preston have not been as convincing at Deepdale as they have been when on the road of late.

The Lilywhites have not won any of the four home matches since Lowe’s debut game – a 2-1 win over strugglers Barnsley – and they needed 89th and 90th minute equalisers to take a point from each of the visits from Sheffield United and Bristol City.

Those home results have us leaning towards another bet here – both teams not to score. Both teams have not scored in six of the last seven Preston league games and three of the last five Reading away Championship matches. A 2-0 PNE win is our preferred correct score play because the hosts have scored exactly two goals in five of their last nine at home while Reading have conceded an average of 1.83 goals across their last six road trips.
