Red Bull Salzburg vs Liverpool Predictions

      • A point is all Liverpool need to book their place in the draw for the next round.
      • Salzburg have scored more goals than each of the other three teams in Group E.
      • Salzburg are averaging 3.2 goals for per game in Group E. Liverpool average 2.2.

Three points a must for hosts

When this group was drawn, not too many people would’ve expected Salzburg to be tussling with Liverpool and Napoli come match-day six, though the Austrian outfit have defied expectations and have shown the wider audience they’re a side capable of doing the business at this level.

What has really impressed about Salzburg is the way in which they’ve got at teams, played without fear and scored plenty of goals. It’s no fluke Jesse Marsch’s men have scored more goals than each of the other three sides in Group E. The Austrians have adopted a forward-thinking approach at every turn.

Such an approach has left them open to attack on several occasions, but had they not looked to get on the front foot they probably wouldn’t be in with a shout of making the last 16. Salzburg did lose when they went to Anfield, but they competed, scoring three goals in the process, so they’ll fancy themselves to, at the very least, make this a tough test for The Reds.

A point will do for the holders

As the holders, Liverpool would’ve been hoping to breeze through the group stage, especially as they only just scraped through last season. Unfortunately, they’ve done no such thing. Thanks to a few lacklustre efforts, Jurgen Klopp’s men come into match-day six needing a point, which on the face of it, seems highly likely; but they’re visiting a strong side, so a point isn’t guaranteed.

Liverpool’s away-day efforts in Group E have been mixed. They failed to turn up when losing 2-0 at Napoli, while they won without really getting out of second gear in Belgium, beating Genk by four goals to one.

The worry for Klopp will be that his side has played an awful lot of football recently, while their defensive insecurities are also a cause for concern, especially ahead of a match against the top-scoring side in the group. However, what’s certainly worth considering is Klopp’s rotation in recent matches, with Sadio Mane in particular kept fresh without playing a single minute against Bournemouth at the weekend.

More attacking joy for the hosts

In the betting, ‘Salzburg to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ catches the eye. The hosts, who’re averaging 3.2 goals for, have got lots of quality going forward, as we’ve seen over the last few months. They’ve scored at least twice in four out of five in Group E, while they know what it takes to score goals against Liverpool having notched three times at Anfield.

Moreover, the visitors haven’t exactly been infallible at the back of late, shipping two or more against both Salzburg and Napoli in this group, conceding at least once in 13 of their last 14 matches. All in all, given Salzburg’s attacking success in the group already, it’s easy to feel the chances of multiple home goals are greater than the current odds suggest. Therefore, a punt on the above offers a slither of value.

In the ‘Correct Score’ market, a 2-2 draw appeals. Liverpool are no great side defensively, as we’ve seen both in this competition and in the Premier League of late. However, their attacking quality is not to be questioned. Salzburg have conceded multiple goals in three out of five in this group, so a relatively high-scoring draw appeals.
