Tip Reasoning

  • Malmo won the first leg of this tie by a 1-0 scoreline
  • Both sides are contesting for the title in their respective domestic leagues

Close encounter expected in Latvian capital

The first leg of this contest ended with Malmo picking up a 1-0 win to carry into this second leg clash. The game last week was tight throughout but Malmo will be disappointed to only have a 1-0 lead with the Swedish team expected to have had a much more handy advantage at this point.

That makes this a slightly trickier match than they would’ve liked with Riga looking to make things difficult from the off. The Latvians have won four of their last seven games, seeing them sit two points off the top of the league. They’ve averaged well over two goals a game however and conceded less than a goal a game on average too but it remains to be seen if they can translate this into European success.

Malmo have been performing to a much higher level in the Swedish league, winning five of their last six games in the Allsvenskan and sitting top of the league after 11 games. They, too, have scored at a rate of more than two a game but have conceded 16 times in 11 games with a worse defensive record than their opponents this week.

Ultimately we think Malmo will have too much for their opponents over two legs and, despite Riga making this a good contest, we’re predicting that Malmo make it through to the next round following a 1-1 draw here. Neither side will want to give much away in the opening stages and this could lead to a lack of goals, leading us to make a 1-1 final score prediction.
