Tip Reasoning

  • Salernitana’s record of just 11 goals in 14 games is Serie A’s worst attacking record.
  • Salernitana’s 2-2 draw with Verona back in September is the only time they’ve avoided defeat against opposition outside the league’s bottom five.
  • Juventus’s 16 goals conceded is the fourth-best such record in the league, and none of their Serie A games have been decided by more than a one-goal margin.

Perfect Opportunity for Old Lady to Bounce Back

Juventus went into Saturday’s headline clash with Atalanta boasting a superb record against teams at the top of Serie A, and hoping to close the gap on the Champions League places. Instead, Duvan Zapata’s goal leaves them closer, points-wise, to 15th-placed Venezia than they are to Atalanta in fourth.

Tuesday’s trip to Salernitana, however, should represent the perfect opportunity for Max Allegri’s team to bounce back. The hosts scored a crucial last-minute equaliser in their basement clash with Cagliari last time out, but it wasn’t enough to move them off the bottom of Serie A.

Salernitana are winless in four, have Serie A’s worst attacking record after netting just 11 goals in 14 games, and have failed to score in four of their seven home league matches. They have also only managed one positive result against a team higher than 16th in the current standings; a 2-2 draw with Verona back in September. Juventus have toiled this season, but they really shouldn’t have any problems here, if Allegri’s side are to have any hope of chasing down the top four.

Back a Juve Clean Sheet

Juventus’ struggles have largely been the result of a lack of creativity, rather than an absence of solidity; their record of 16 goals conceded in 14 games is the fourth-best defensive record in a high-scoring Serie A season, and they rank as the third best team in the league in terms of expected goals conceded. Juve’s last four wins have all been accompanied by clean sheets, and I’m backing them to win to nil again here against impotent opponents.

Juventus have not yet had a single Serie A game decided by anything more than a one-goal margin. Alongside the fact that Leonardo Bonucci is currently their joint-highest Serie A goalscorer, this demonstrates the way in which Juve have failed to turn on the style since Allegri’s return. As a result, a nervy 1-0 away win looks a strong correct score prediction for this fixture.
