Samp’s dire run leaves them back in relegation mix

New Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo needs to steady the ship at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, and fast. Sampdoria have lost five matches on the bounce in all competitions, and failed to win any of their last seven, sliding to within three points of the relegation zone having previously put some distance between themselves and the basement battle.

Sampdoria have played some strong opponents in their recent run, being knocked out of the Coppa Italia at Juventus and losing narrowly to Napoli and Torino, but Giampaolo’s first game at the helm saw them lose a crucial six-pointer at Spezia. Ahead of his first home game since returning to the club, the former AC Milan coach has his work cut out; Samp have the fourth-worst home record in Serie A, losing seven of 12 on their home turf and not winning at home since November.

The visit of Sassuolo, then, looks a difficult challenge for the relegation-battlers. Alessio Dionisi’s team have not lost on their travels since 7^th November, winning two and drawing three of their last five road trips, which included difficult assignments at Milan, Fiorentina, Empoli, and Torino. Sassuolo have only lost one of their last five matches, and two of their last 12.

Back strong visitors to turn up the heat on Sampdoria

These two teams shared a goalless draw back in August, an uncharacteristic result for a Sassuolo team which has only failed to score twice in 22 games since. Away from home, only Milan and Atalanta have scored more goals than the Neroverdi, who have plundered 24 goals in 11 road trips, and only six teams, including the league’s top five, have won more points on their travels.

With that in mind, we’re backing Sassuolo to edge this contest, leaving an out-of-shape Sampdoria looking nervously over their shoulders. With both teams netting in 16 of the visitors’ last 18 games, a 2-1 away win could be a good correct score prediction.
