Salzburg to seize first-leg lead

Salzburg struggled in the new-look Champions League last season, while they fell short at the Club World Cup as they were eliminated at the group stage. Having failed to win the Austrian Bundesliga in back-to-back seasons, this hasn’t been a great couple of years for the club.

However, Salzburg navigated the Champions League qualifiers last season, eliminating Twente and Dynamo Kyiv. Their opponents in the second qualifying round are Brann, who have fallen at the play-off stage of Conference League qualifying in each of the previous two seasons.

Brann were beaten 2-0 at KFUM at the weekend and they face a much bigger test in Europe this term, having met Go Ahead Eagles, St Mirren, and Astana last summer.

The Eliteserien title-challengers have enough attacking talent to cause Salzburg issues. The Austrian side were shaky at the back throughout their Club World Cup campaign, but they have enough quality to edge a high-scoring clash.
