Reason For Southampton vs Manchester United Predictions

  • Southampton and Man Utd have drawn in four of their last five meetings.
  • The Saints are unbeaten in seven Premier League matches.
  • Southampton and Man Utd drew 2-2 in two of their last four encounters.
  • Bruno Fernandes has score 10 goals for Man Utd so far this season.

Slick Saints continue to impress

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s slick Southampton side continue to look the part this season, and the Saints’ 1-1 draw at Wolves last weekend stretched their lengthening unbeaten streak to seven Premier League matches.

Following their superb Autumn surge, Southampton sit in 5th spot ahead of Sundays’ game, just three points shy of Premier League leaders Tottenham, and with their confidence soaring, Hasenhüttl’s charges will fancy their chances of toppling Man Utd at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The razor-sharp Danny Ings’s absence through injury hasn’t had blunted the Saints’ edge as of yet, and with a promising partnership developing between Che Adams and Theo Walcott, Southampton look well-equipped to maintain their standards without their talisman.

United hitting high and low notes

Manchester United meanwhile, warmed up for their trip to the south coast by beating Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1 in the Champions League – a result that provided their third win in as many games.

It was somewhat fitting that United blew hot and cold in their continental contest on Tuesday however, and their performance levels have fluctuated wildly from the superb to the dreadful all season long.

On the road, Solskjaer’s side have been far more effective however, and United – who have taken maximum points in each of their last seven Premier League away games – are unbeaten in 10 domestic tussles away from Old Trafford overall.

Southampton to avoid defeat?

Southampton have been playing some wonderful football on their way to picking up points and positive results against several of the Premier League’s leading lights, and having impressed against Chelsea, Everton and Wolves since mid-October, the Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men look ready to go toe-to-toe with Man Utd on Sunday.

The Saints have proved tough opponents for United to topple in recent seasons, and four of the last five meetings between the clubs ended all square, including the 2-2 draw the well-matched sides played out at Old Trafford in July.

Solskjaer’s counter-attacking style tends to see better results on the road, though United generally don’t cope well with teams that press high and aggressively like Southampton do.

With the Saints in such fine form, and United still searching for consistency, the host’s odds in the double chance market this weekend against a Red Devils outfit that dropped points in four of their last eight Premier League assignments look to good to pass up.

Two of the last four encounters between Southampton and United finished level at 2-2 however, and the same outcome is favoured for our correct score prediction.

The Saints hit exactly two goals in each of their last three league games at S. Mary’s Stadium, though a United team averaging 3.3 goals per 90 minutes on their travels this term look capable of notching twice themselves.

Sunday’s game pits one of the division’s form teams against one of the league’s most potent away performers, and an entertaining share of the spoils on the south coast looks possible.

Anytime goalscorer Tip: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes is already into double figures for the season for United thanks to his mid-week brace against Istanbul Basaksehir.

While his penalty kick proficiency certainly adds to his overall numbers, it’s worth noting that no Premier League midfielder has scored more goals from open play than Fernandes since his arrival in January.

Southampton injuries and team news

Nathan Redmond joins Danny Ings on the sidelines for Southampton, while William Smallbone is also rated as doubtful. With his team performing well, Ralph Hasenhüttl is expected to name an unchanged XI from the team that drew with Wolves last week.

Manchester United injuries and team news

Eric Bailly and Luke Shaw are both still in the treatment room for United, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Paul Pogba are all nursing ailments ahead of Sunday’s game.

Donny van de Beek performed well in mid-week, though the Dutch midfielder is expected to return to the bench for the Premier League.
