Sporting Lisbon vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions

  • Sporting have won nine games in a row since a 1-0 defeat in Dortmund.
  • BVB have two defeats in their last three games and have lost their last two in Europe.
  • The visitors are without up to eight players for this game, including star striker Erling Haaland.
  • Sporting have eight wins in 10 home games in all competitions.

Second place the prize as Sporting host BVB

Sporting Lisbon and Borussia Dortmund meet in Champions League Group C on Wednesday with the two sides locked on six points after four games.

BVB won the reverse fixture 1-0 but humbling back-to-back defeats to runaway group leaders Ajax in their two European games since has left their hopes of reaching the last 16 hanging in the balance.

Sporting have won all nine of their games since that defeat in Dortmund, scoring 22 goals and conceding just four in the process, and at a big price it looks worth backing the hosts here.

Injuries impacting Dortmund’s chances

Dortmund have huge injury and suspension problems right now and are missing key men in all areas. Star forward Erling Haaland is missing with a hip injury, defensive talisman Mats Hummels is suspended for the trip to Lisbon and Thorgan Hazard is out after testing positive for Covid-19.

At full strength Dortmund are a match for almost anyone in Europe, but they could struggle without up to eight players missing on Wednesday and that makes the hosts an attractive proposition. Sporting have won eight of their 10 home games this season, losing once to Ajax and drawing with Porto, and they look good value to claim a victory against Dortmund and take a huge step towards a place in the next round.

BVB have only failed to score in two of their eight away games this season so they should be able to make a breakthrough on Wednesday. The German side have also scored in all six of the games Haaland has missed so far, but home advantage should still see Sporting over the line and a 3-1 win for the hosts looks a reasonable correct score selection. There is a chance this game could open up late on in what is almost a knockout clash for these two sides, and as such this could be a high scoring affair.
