It can’t get much worse for Les Verts

Saint-Etienne have already recorded their highest amount of top-flight defeats in a calendar year in 2021 (nine) and as they prop up the table, they must try and mitigate making that record even worse in their final game of the year.

While Saint-Etienne have not scored in their last three games, they do come up against a weak defensive unit in Nantes, who have conceded 1.3 goals per league game in this campaign.

Nantes to push on

The visitors are hoping to end the year in the top-half of the table, which will be a far cry from their appearance in the relegation/promotion play-off at the end of last season. It is this that shows the different trajectories that these clubs find themselves on.

While they are on the up, Nantes often had to come back from adversity to get points on the board. The visitors avoided defeat in over a third of their league games when falling behind this term (36%), so expect a big response should they do so here.

On the evidence, I predict that both teams will score as Saint-Etienne ultimately fall short yet again in a 2-1 defeat which would perfectly sum up their woeful 2021.
