Tip Reasoning

  • At least three goals have been scored in the last four Stoke City home games.
  • At least three goals have been scored in five of the last six Birmingham City away games.
  • There have been 31 goals scored in Birmingham City’s last eight league fixtures (average 3.88 per game).

Powell and purchases add to Potters’ potency

Two clubs that brought in fresh attacking options in January should ensure a few goals are scored in the clash between Stoke City and Birmingham City this weekend. New strikers Josh Maja and Jaden Philogene-Bidace have already broken their ducks for the Potters, whose potency has also been bolstered by the recent return of Nick Powell from injury.

Likewise, three of Lee Bowyer’s recent recruits have all hit the ground running with January joiners Juninho Bacuna, Lyle Taylor and Onel Hernandez all on the scoresheet in the Blues’ 3-0 humbling of the Hatters last weekend.

Saturday’s clash could be a cracker, but there’s no doubt which of the two teams is under greater pressure as Stoke’s owners have backed Michael O’Neill in a bid to make the playoffs. The hosts are currently in their lowest position – 13th – of the season, but could storm the top six once more if they win their back-to-back home games this week against Birmingham and Luton.

Bowyer sticking with two up top

Lee Bowyer, whose side are a couple of wins away from guaranteeing their safety in the division, has fiddled around with his formations all season long but one consistent feature has been his willingness to play two up front – home and away.

That seems to have helped the goal tally at both ends in recent times with only three Championship clubs having seen more goals scored in their games than the 31 Birmingham have witness across their last eight fixtures. An expectation of over 2.5 goals coming on Saturday looks reasonable given at least three goals have been scored in the last four Stoke City home games and in five of the last six Birmingham City away games.

As far as a correct score projection goes, we note Birmingham’s woeful away record and favour a 2-1 home win. The Blues have scored in five of their last six away games, but have shipped an average of 3.16 goals during that period.
