Stoke’s dip in form may transpire

Such is the congested nature of the Championship table, Stoke and Southampton will still believe that they can make their presence felt in the playoff picture.

Stoke start the weekend in tenth, only two points off sixth-placed Wrexham, while Southampton are within seven points off the Welsh side despite lingering down in 15th position.

A string of wins can soon transform your fortunes in the Championship and this could be a good opportunity for the Saints to spark an upturn in form.

Stoke are now winless in three after last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham, where they had only one shot on target and equalised thanks to an own goal from Phil Neumann.

The Potters had lost 2-1 at home to Middlesbrough and been frustrated in a goalless draw when entertaining QPR prior to that, and their recent form on their own patch has been uninspiring.

Stoke have won only two of their last seven home games and Southampton, having been relegated from the Premier League last season, are clearly capable of better.

Southampton should soon up their game

The Saints built on a 1-0 win at home to Sheffield United with a 1-1 draw at south-coast rivals Portsmouth and their tally of 41 goals in 29 league games is bettered by five of the top six.

There is still top-flight quality in this Southampton side and, with Stoke missing some key names through injury, they look the most likely victors.

Stoke won 2-1 away at St Mary’s in August but Southampton, having seen both teams score in ten of their last 13 matches, may be able to exact their revenge in the same scoreline.
