Reason For Strasbourg vs Bordeaux Predictions

Strasbourg beat Bordeaux at the weekend in the league to make it four consecutive Ligue 1 victories and six wins from seven in all competitions. It has been a fantastic run for Thierry Laurey’s side, one that has only been blemished by PSG’s 2-0 victory in the Coupe de France last week. The Alsatians currently sit 5th in the table, just one point behind Saint-Étienne but are ultimately aiming for a positive second half of the season, which could see them qualify for the Champions League; a tremendous achievement considering they were playing 5th tier football just seven years ago. It has been a meteoric rise to the top for Strasbourg but the journey isn’t over, as their first Coupe de la Ligue since 2005 is the next thing on their to-win list.

Strasbourg’s fantastic winning run hasn’t come about because of luck but rather hard work in the final third. The toil of Ludovic Ajorque, Adrien Thomasson and Jonas Martin has paid dividends in goals, with them scoring 22 goals in their last dozen games. Top striker Lebo Mothiba has just came back from injury so will also bring more goals to the side. Their defence has left a bit to be desired, with just three clean sheets in their last thirteen matches but the strong attack has usually covered for that. They got a clean sheet at the weekend against Bordeaux though and will aim to match that in this semi-final.

Bordeaux have been blowing hot and cold this season, with their vast inconsistency being a plague on their progress. They sit 12th but have won three and lost three of their last six matches. They managed to pick up a run of form across November and December as they went ten games undefeated, six of these results were draws but it was refreshing to see them approach games with a bit more grit; that quality has continued in recent weeks, bar some underwhelming results.

They were beaten 1-0 in the Coupe de France by Ligue 2 Le Havre after a disappointing draw with relegation-threatened Amiens. However, they battled hard against Nice and Strasbourg and were unlucky to lose both matches via a penalty and a 93rd minute winner. Their defence has evidently improved, with four clean sheets in their last nine matches, a pretty good record for a team of their standing. It will be interesting to see how they approach this second game against Strasbourg in just four days, after their defeat at the weekend.

Even though the result was tight on Saturday, the performances from both teams were drastically different, with Strasbourg dominating the shots on target category, five to one. Kenny Lala’s late winner was simply a buildup of pressure and we expect the hosts to do the job in much simpler fashion this time round. Strasbourg have won each of the two meetings between the teams this season and have only lost one of their last ten home matches. Bordeaux can’t boast as good an away record; in terms of the past few months they have been rather good on the road, but in recent weeks they have lost two of their last three and really deserved to lose the match they won over Angers. Bordeaux have looked very awkward in the final third recently, with them failing to score in half of their last six matches, two of these scoring fixtures included ten-man Dijon and Ligue 2 Le Havre. As a result, we don’t see Bordeaux getting much out of this match and Strasbourg should be much more comfortable this time round in a 2-0 win.
