Sunderland Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Sunderland, who didn’t play in midweek, have drawn both of their home Championship matches so far this season. Norwich City, who lost to Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, have lost both of their away league games this term. There has also been a significant drop in away wins this season in the Championship, halving to only around 16%.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

A 1-1 final result is forecast as the Black Cats have drawn both of their previous home games with goals each time while Norwich have managed no more than one goal in any of their last five away league games.

Josh Sargent To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Sargent, who has scored three times in his last two appearances, remains good value to score here. It would be a surprise if Dean Smith dropped him in favour of Teemu Pukki while on such good scoring form.

Sunderland vs Norwich Predictions

  • Sunderland, who didn’t play in midweek, have drawn both of their home Championship matches so far this season.
  • Norwich City, who lost to Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, have lost both of their away league games this term.
  • Josh Sargent has scored three goals in his last two appearances for the Canaries.

Refreshed Sunderland can keep Canaries waiting for first away win

Sunderland boss Alex Neil will relish the opportunity to send his rested Black Cats players out against his former club Norwich City on Saturday – and the hosts should at least avoid defeat.

Sunderland are fifth in the table going into the sixth round of Championship matches, three places and one point above the fancied Canaries. The first month of the campaign has been intense and full of surprises, but some sort of order is beginning to show now.

One of the biggest differences between this season and last is the percentage of away wins, down from 30% last term to just 16% so far. Even last season’s number was down on the year before, so the drop is really significant.

Sargent’s a major goal threat

One potential reason could be the lack of any respite between fixtures for teams in an even-more congested campaign than usual, so it will be interesting to see if the trend continues. In the meantime, it is probably best to oppose favouritres on the road like Norwich.

Dean Smith’s side have found some form off the back of an injury to Teemu Pukki that opened the door for Josh Sargent to be a more visible focal point for their attacks. They still don’t look solid enough at the back to be considered title contenders though.

Sargent, who has scored three times in his last two appearances, remains value to score here, but we would rather take Sunderland in the double chance market than the visitors. A 1-1 final result is forecast as the Black Cats have drawn both of their previous home games with goals each time while Norwich have managed no more than one goal in any of their last five away league games.
