Switzerland vs Faroe Islands Predictions
Switzerland have bounced back from a rather tame Euro 2016 in excellent fashion. Their talented squad only narrowly beat Albania in the first group game in France and they followed it with draws against Romania and France before going out on penalties to Poland. In total they scored three goals in four games, and their matches were generally drab affairs.
This is something they have tried to change in this World Cup qualifying campaign. They beat group favourites and Euro 2016 winners Portugal 2-0 in their first qualifying match and then won a five goal thriller in Hungary. Their 2-1 win over Andorra last time out was a bit more low key, but the signs are generally promising.
Faroe Islands, despite their minnow status, have actually put in a pretty good shift so far in this qualification period. They managed a goalless draw with Hungary in the opener and then beat Latvia 2-0 in their second match. However, their confidence could be pretty low after a 6-0 hammering by Portugal last month.
Away from home Faroe Islands have had some decent results recently as well. They have won four of their last nine games on the road, but it’s important to note that these victories came against the likes of Gibraltar, Greece, Liechtenstein, and Latvia.
Switzerland have won seven of their last ten home matches though and the majority of these have been against stronger opposition than Faroe Islands. They have also comfortably won all four of their previous meetings with the minnows.
In terms of goalscorers I’m expecting a good showing from Admir Mehmedi. The Bayer Leverkusen striker is expected to lead the line with Breel Embolo out injured, and the 25 year old has already netted twice in this campaign. He looks the best option for an anytime goalscorer bet.
I think Faroe Islands could get on the scoresheet as well though. The visitors have scored in seven of their last 11 away games and are facing a Switzerland side who recently conceded to the incredibly goal-shy Andorra. The hosts have conceded in four of their last six at home as well, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Faroe Islands find the net.
I still think Switzerland will get the three points though, so I’m backing Switzerland to Win and Both Teams to Score at 2/1 along with a 3-1 correct score prediction at 11/1.
