Tottenham Hotspur vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
- Atletico Madrid won the first leg 5-2
- Tottenham are winless in eight with six defeats (all comps)
- Los Colchoneros are on a three-game winning streak
Mission impossible for struggling Spurs
Atletico Madrid have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a resounding 5-2 win over Tottenham in the Spanish capital last week and they can finish the job with a victory in London on Wednesday.
Spurs followed up that mauling in Madrid with an impressive point and thoroughly deserved against Liverpool at Anfield, but they remain winless under Igor Tudor and have gone eight games without a victory across all competitions – losing six of those games.
The tie already looks beyond Tottenham and Premier League survival has to be their priority, and Atleti can ensure they only have that target to focus on by ending their European bid with a defeat.
Rare road win for Atleti
Los Colchoneros have managed just one win in five attempts away from home in the Champions League this season but this trip offers a chance to improve on that record.
An injury hit Tottenham side had to dig deep against Liverpool, whereas Atleti had an easier time of it in a 1-0 win over Getafe in their domestic assignment at the weekend.
The hosts have a lengthy injury list, including some recent additions as Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha are unavailable on Wednesday, and key forward Richarlison is suspended for Wednesday’s game.
Atleti don’t need to win this game and that is a slight concern. However, the La Liga outfit are in form with six victories in their last seven games and they should get plenty of chances on the counter as Spurs have to take risks with a big deficit to recover. Taking that into account, Atleti look capable of beating a weakened Tottenham team who will have one eye on next weekend crucial clash with Premier League drop rivals Nottingham Forest.
Spurs can strike in defeat
A repeat of the seven-goal thriller served up in the first leg is perhaps unlikely but we may still be treated to goals at both ends and a 2-1 win for the visitors has a chance in the correct score market.
Tottenham have scored in 14 consecutive home games across all competitions and can keep the scoreline respectable, and Atletico have no real need to go hunting for a big margin of victory after effectively settling the tie in the first leg.
Julian Alvarez starred for Atleti in the first leg with two goals and he is the standout pick for an anytime effort at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Argentina international has done his best work in the Champions League this season with seven goals in 10 games and he should come into this game fairly fresh after featuring for just 25 minutes against Getafe.
