Cardiff can keep stodgy Latics at bay

Wigan Athletic have been a bit stodgy in their home games for a while and may not find more than one goal again when faced by Cardiff’s defensive set-up on Saturday. The Latics have failed to score more than once in eight of their last nine home league games and all five since gaining promotion to the Championship.

Leam Richardson’s side, who saw a four-match win streak away from home ended by Hull on Wednesday, have failed to register an xG figure of greater than one in their last two at DW Stadium.

It may not be a big concern for them at the moment while they remain well clear of the relegation zone, but things can turn quickly in the Championship – just ask Steve Morison. Cardiff have taken four points from the two games since he was sacked to move up to 13th and are now a win away from getting into the playoff places.

Balance of Bluebirds is weighted towards defence

While they may not find that win this weekend, they should ensure a point at least by scoring in Lancashire as their hosts look incapable of getting two goals against anyone.

The Bluebirds began the season with a stout defence, but Morison tinkered with the balance of the side in a bid to get them scoring. Interim boss Mark Hudson has reinforced their backline with more protection in midfield and they have just been rewarded with a rare clean sheet win, albeit a penalty save in the dying minutes was needed to get the result.

Aside from opposing Wigan to score a second here, a 1-1 draw is preferred in correct score markets as Cardiff have not scored more than once in 12 of 13 games this season while the Latics have only conceded multiple goals in one of their five home league contests.
