Aston Villa to Win

Reason for tip

Villa have gone three games unbeaten, holding Man City to a draw before impressing against Southampton and Leeds. Meanwhile, Forest have lost six of their eight games so far this season and they’re coming off a 4-0 defeat by a Leicester side who hadn’t won a game up to that point.

Aston Villa 2-0

Reason for tip

Villa have kept back-to-back clean sheets and they have conceded just 0.5 xG across their last two matches in total. Back them to put a couple of goals past a Forest side who have conceded 18 times in a five-match losing streak.

Ollie Watkins To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Ollie Watkins has scored 26 goals since moving to the Premier League and he took six shots in their draw at Leeds. Given that he’s facing the worst defence in the top flight this term, back the forward to get back on the scoresheet in this clash.

Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa Predictions

  • Forest have lost their last five league games, conceding 18 times
  • The hosts have made their worst start defensively since 1930
  • Aston Villa have sharpened up, conceding just once across their last three (W1 D2)
  • Only two Premier League sides since 2003 have faced more shots on target by this stage than Forest this term

Forest back Cooper

A week on from their 4-0 hammering at Leicester, Nottingham Forest face another vital Monday night clash. That defeat looked set to cost Steve Cooper his job earlier this week, but the board gave him the ultimate vote of confidence – a new three-year contract.

However, Cooper needs to get his side back on form soon, with the upcoming double-header against Aston Villa and Wolves likely to decide their hopes of survival. However, the visitors will head here seeing this as an opportunity after a few positive results.

Back to basics for Villa

With his job under threat, Steven Gerrard took Aston Villa back to basics in order to get them moving up the table. After conceding in 11 consecutive Premier League games, Aston Villa have kept clean sheets in their last two against Southampton and Leeds.

Before that they were also able to hold City to a 1-1 draw at home, to the Villains are trending in the right direction. Their last two games have seen them hold Saints to an Expected Goals tally of just 0.22, while Leeds managed just 0.3 at Elland Road.

Villa created the better chances in both clashes but they slipped up in a 0-0 draw at Leeds. However, repeating that kind of performance against this Forest side should deliver another win.

Defensive struggles to cost Forest

The hosts are in terrible shape and they look vulnerable going into Monday’s clash. Forest have lost six of their eight Premier League matches so far, including their last five in a row. The hosts have conceded 21 goals after eight Premier League matches this season, their most at this stage of a top-flight season in their history and their most in any season since 1931.

Cooper just can’t get his side to stop leaking opportunities. Forest have faced the most shots (136) and most shots on target (56) of any side in the Premier League this term. In fact, just two teams since 2003-04 have faced more shots on target in their first eight games in a season in the top flight: Blackpool in 2010-11 (57) and Hull City in 2016-17 (59).

With Villa looking sharper defensively they look good for the points in this clash. I’m backing them to capitalise on the hosts issues, with Ollie Watkins likely to boost his goal tally for the season, having hit 11 goals last term. I’m also backing Villa for another clean sheet in a 2-0 victory.
