Young Boys set for stylish start

Second and third from last season, Servette make the trip to Young Boys hoping to show why they were the team to chase home Basel in the Swiss Super League.

However, Young Boys may be able to get off to the stronger start in this season opener at Stadion Wankdorf, where they lost only two of their 19 league matches last term.

Young Boys have also had the overall edge in recent meetings with Servette, winning two and drawing one of their last three rivalries.

Servette may have their focus elsewhere

Another factor to consider is that this fixture comes sandwiched between a two-legged Champions League tie for Servette, who have a 1-0 lead to defend ahead of a home meeting with Plzen in four days time.

So it would be understandable if Servette’s attention were elsewhere and they may not get much sympathy from Young Boys, who netted 43 goals in those 19 home games last season.

Young Boys appear to have done some shrewd summer business under manager Giorgio Contini – the arrival of Alan Virginius from Lille looks exciting – and they were involved in the league phase of last season’s Champions League.

So, while it promises to be competitive, Young Boys may hold the aces and a 1-0 win appeals from a correct-score perspective. On the last four occasions that the hosts have beaten Servette it was by a single goal.
