A great start to the UK Open Darts for us as our Friday afternoon acca landed at odds of 14/1!

The tournament’s play got underway with a game between Maik Kuivenhoven and Daniel Day. The Dutchman plays at a level above his English opponent, and we fancied that would tell in this clash. After a scrappy opening leg, won by Day, Kuivenhoven soon hit his stride and reeled off six consecutive legs to claim a comfortable 6-1 victory, and get our acca off to the best possible start.

Meanwhile, Michael Rasztovits was also in action against Barry Lynn. This turned out to be a real battle as Rasztovits scored well enough, but was woeful on his doubles. In a game that went one way and then the other, Rasztovits ran out an unconvincing 6-4 winner. The Austrian ended up missing 27 of his 33 darts at a double, which won’t win you many matches at this level, but fortunately for us it was enough to win this one.

In the third leg of our acca we needed Matt Clark to defeat Niels Zonneveld. Clark got off to the perfect start, breaking the Dutchman’s throw at the first time of asking, but Zonneveld responded immediately with a break of his own. With the scores at 3-3 and a close finish in prospect, Zonneveld’s level dropped off, and Clark took full advantage to secure a 6-3 win.

Onto the fourth game of our acca, and we needed Mark Dudbridge to take out Mark Wilson. Wilson has been in terrible form recently, and it was a surprise that this match was as close as it was. The opening four legs all went against the throw, and with the next four also being split evenly, the match was evenly poised at 4-4. With another nervy finish in prospect, Dudbridge held throw in the ninth leg and then got the crucial break with a 68 finish, to claim the victory.

Ted Evetts was up next, against an out-of-form Mike van Duivenbode. Evetts has produced some decent darts in his short career, and after breaking early in this match, never looked back, running out a comfortable 6-2 winner.

The final leg of the acca was a match on the main stage between Ross Smith and Canadian Dawson Murschell. Smith got off to the perfect start, breaking throw early and racing to a 3-0 lead. He soon broke again and looked in full control at 5-1 up. Murschell upped his game and staged a mini fightback to take the next two legs, but Smith held his nerve to take out 39 and claim a 6-3 victory.
