The Premier League have released their official fixture list for the new 2019/20 season!

Typically, supporters like to scan through the freshly inked schedule, plotting the journey their team will take through the new campaign, picking out the easiest and trickiest looking sequences of games, along with local derby and rival team clashes.

Of course, the calendar has yet to be decimated and re-assembled by the big-wig TV executives, though we still have a decent, general idea about who plays who and when.

Defending champions Man City start their title defence with a trip to play West Ham in Saturday’s early kick off, while Tottenham welcome Aston Villa to North London in the televised evening contest.

On Sunday, Manchester United lock horns with Chelsea at Old Trafford in what is undoubtedly the most eye-catching of the 2019/20 season’s opening weekend, but not before Arsenal test their mettle against Rafa Benitez and Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Manchester City and Liverpool’s 2018/19 title tussle ran right through to the final day of last season, and if the division’s two strongest sides match each other stride for stride again next term, the advantage will undoubtedly be with the Citizens on the last day of the 2019/20 campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s men finish their season with a home game against Norwich City, while Liverpool must negotiate a potentially tricky tie with Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Elsewhere, Man Utd’s top 4 pursuit could come a cropper in a tough looking bout with Leicester at the King Power Stadium on the last day of the season, while relegation candidates Burnley, Brighton, Southampton and Sheffield United will contest a couple of potentially pivotal last-day match-ups in the race for survival.

The Derbies

Supporters will have to wait quite a while to watch the first Manchester derby of the season. City take on United at the Etihad Stadium on December 7^th, with the return fixture at Old Trafford pencilled in for March 7^th 2020.

Arsenal and Spurs renew their rivalries much earlier when they do battle at the Emirates on August 31^st. The North London antagonists meet again on Spurs’ patch on April 25^th, just a few weeks from the end of the 2019/20 season.

The Merseyside derby’s first offering lands on December 4^th, when Everton cross Stanley Park to play Liverpool at Anfield. The Merseyside rivals meet again on March 14^th on the same day Tottenham play Manchester United in London.

Favourable Run in for City?

After a testing run of games, where defending champions City play Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool inside the space of 5 fixtures between February 29^th and April 4^th, the Citizens have a decidedly winnable sequence of fixtures towards the end of the season.

City finish their campaign with 6 games against Southampton (A), Newcastle (H), Brighton (A), Bournemouth (H), Watford (A) and Norwich (H) – a run of games that Pep Guardiola will expect to take maximum points from. 18 points from that sextet of games could be enough to help City keep their grip on the Premier League title.

In contrast, Liverpool must come through games against Arsenal and Chelsea inside their last trio of Premier League 19/10 fixtures, meaning the Reds will have to do it the hard way if they are to finally land the league title they crave.
