Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.
Portugal have made life hard for themselves, as they need to beat Spain to reach the last eight after seeing off Croatia. Had they beaten Colombia to top spot, they’d have faced Ghana before a last 16 clash with Switzerland, who they beat 6-1 at this stage in 2022.
Portugal should still be confident, given that they beat Spain on penalties in the Nations League 12 months ago. I have faith in Portugal to at least take this to extra time, and I’ve put together a massive 97/1 Ultimate Bet Builder for Monday night’s game in Arlington.
Portugal vs Spain Ultimate Bet Builder
Renato Veiga 1+ shots on target (including woodwork)
Veiga has been earmarked as Portugal’s set piece threat, with Aston Villa’s Austin MacPhee working as their set piece coach. They aimed for Veiga on several occasions against Croatia, including the corner which led to the penalty through which Portugal equalised.
Veiga had two more chances in that match, which totalled 0.48 Expected Goals, and he can get a shot on target against a Spanish side which doesn’t have a lot of height to defend corners.
Mikel Oyarzabal 2+shots on target (including woodwork)
Oyarzabal has scored four times at this tournament, and he’s taken 17 shots at goal through his first four matches. Portugal’s Euro 2024 display against France suggests they’ll aim to defend deep, and that should see Spain aim to work the ball into the box for Oyarzabal.
He has eight shots on target across four matches, and he’s backed for two more on Monday.
Marc Cucurella 1+ shots
Cucurella isn’t shy about getting forward from left-back, and he’s likely to be a threat to Portugal at AT&T Stadium.
Cucurella has taken three shots in his four appearances, and the former Chelsea man had an effort on goal in the Nations League meeting between these sides last year.
Rodri to be carded
Rodri remains a fantastic midfielder, but he hasn’t quite reached the heights he was at prior to his injury.
He was booked eight times for Manchester City last season, and the quality in this Portuguese midfield could pose him problems. Rodri committed three fouls against a Uruguay side who are largely short on talent, bar central midfield.
Rodri was booked on three occasions in Spain’s run to Euro 2024 glory, and he could pick up his first caution of the World Cup against Portugal.
