Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

We’re braced for another exciting season in the Championship, as sides jostle for promotion to the top-flight. Norwich, Brentford and Watford are all aiming to claim a top-flight place, while those three attack-minded sides should rack up plenty of goals.

Ahead of the new Championship season, we’re looking at the sharpshooters who can fire their side to the top-flight. There are plenty of outside options with the market starting at 7/1, so we’re hoping to land on a few value picks in the chase for the golden boot.

Championship Top Scorer

Championship Top Scorer Odds

The contenders at the top of the betting are a real mix, but they reflect the gulf at the top of the division which has seen Norwich, Brentford and Watford made the favourites for the title. As a result, four of their players feature in the five favourites for the golden boot.

That reflects the recent trend in the Championship, which has seen the leading sides storm away with this prize. Six of the last seven winners – including last season’s joint winners – finished in the top six.

  • Teemu Pukki (Norwich) – 7/1
  • Ivan Toney (Brentford) – 8/1
  • Troy Deeney (Watford) – 16/1
  • Lewis Grabban (Nottingham Forest) – 16/1
  • Glenn Murray (Watford) – 16/1

Teemu Pukki to be Top Scorer – 15/2

2019 was certainly Teemu Pukki’s year. He topped the Championship scoring charts with 29 goals, while he scored nine times in the Premier League before Christmas. He hit just two after the turn of the year, watching on as Norwich dropped into the second-tier once again.

Pukki did struggle after initially surprising top-flight sides, but we don’t think Championship defences will be able to contain him. A return of 11 top-flight goals with a promoted side isn’t bad, it just seems worse given the early cluster and the following drought. His record in the second-tier last time around was great and he’ll need to return to that level now that the Canaries have Jordan Hugill and Adam Idah competing with him.

Pukki has the bonus of playing in front of an incredibly creative midfield, with the Canaries’ struggles to create against top-flight opposition a big factor in Pukki’s problems this year. Their talent should thrive at Championship level and lay on opportunities for the Finn against lower quality defences, so we’re backing him to top the scoring charts this season.

Norwich/Pukki Double Forecast – 33/1

Our Championship winner predictions saw us back Norwich to have too much quality for their Championship rivals this season. Given that we see the Canaries getting success in the league and their forward is set for another high-scoring season, we like the look of the 33/1 double on Norwich to win the league and Pukki to finish as the top scorer, just as they did 14 months ago.

Lewis Grabban to be Top Scorer – 16/1

While Nottingham Forest have added Lyle Taylor to their side, he has to work hard to dislodge Lewis Grabban from the starting line-up. He’s got a great track record at this level in recent years, hitting 56 Championship goals across the last three seasons.

That includes 20 last season, which saw him finish as the third-highest scorer in the league. With the only two players who outscored him now in the Premier League, we expect the Forest forward to feature at the top of the scoring charts this season. Given his track record and his finish last term, we think 16/1 is a good price for a striker who will line up for a side bidding to secure a place in the playoffs.

Adam Armstrong Blackburn

Adam Armstrong to be Top Scorer – 25/1

After more than tripling the five goals he scored in 18/19, Adam Armstrong will be looking to kick on again for an adventurous Blackburn Rovers side. The forward has earned his place leading the line for Rovers, a team who will be looking to sneak into the playoffs this term. Tony Mowbray will encourage his team to get forward all season long, which presents 23-year-old Armstrong a chance to continue his development.

Armstrong made 46 appearances last season, including 40 starts, while he averaged a shot on target per game. Armstrong is clearly getting chances at Ewood Park, while the return of Bradley Dack in attacking midfield should help create more chances. Given that, we expect Armstrong to be in the running to finish as top scorer. Given his price of 25/1, we think the Rovers frontman is being overlooked ahead of this season.
