EFL Relegation early bird predictions & 106/1 treble tip

The new season isn’t too far away now and as the big kick off approaches I’ve taken a look at the EFL relegation markets and picked out a contender from the Championship, League One and League Two to suffer the dreaded drop.

We’ll have a comprehensive set of outright tips for all the UK’s big leagues in the coming weeks here on FST and we’ve picked out our Scottish Premiership winner here. Before we take a deeper dive into the season ahead, I’ve taken an early look here and found three candidates I feel offer a bit of value away from the favourites at this stage of the summer.

Championship Relegation Prediction

Portsmouth to be relegated @ 5/1

The three promoted teams from League One are the favourites to go down from the Championship this season. That is fair, but all three also look capable of surviving and one or two will probably avoid an immediate return to the third tier and that opens the door for a bit of an outside pick.

Portsmouth flirted with the drop last season for large periods but they finished the campaign strongly and ultimately ended up in 18th place, eight points clear of danger. They only lost one of their eight games but had it not been for that end of season flourish they would have been in real danger, and they are likely to be among the strugglers once again.

Pompey have made some bold moves over the summer by capturing Serbian forward Marko Milovanovic for around £3million and Estonia international midfielder Rocco Shein in a £2million deal from Almeria and Fredrikstad respectively. Those are eye-catching fees but both are untested in England and that comes with some risk, if either or both deals don’t work out then Pompey could find themselves in trouble.

League One Relegation Prediction

Cambridge to be relegated @ 7/4

I am going for one of the promoted teams in League One as Cambridge offer enough value at 7/4 to be of interest.

The U’s have seen a lot of players move on since the end of last season and so far they haven’t brought in many new faces themselves. That probably will change fairly soon but right now the squad they have looks to be one that should struggle in the third tier.

Cambridge had spent four seasons in League One prior to last term in League Two but had only finished higher than 18th in one of those seasons. Even if they do make a few good moves in the summer there is a strong chance that next season will be spent battling relegation rather than challenging at the top end of a tough division.

League Two Relegation Prediction

Tranmere to be relegated @ 11/2

Promoted teams York and Rochdale both look capable of avoiding an immediate drop out of the Football League, so an established club could go and Tranmere stand out at 11/2.

Rovers lost 20 of their final 26 games in League Two last season but still finished two points clear of danger. They have been active in the summer transfer market, landing veteran Tom Ince on a free transfer from Watford in a particularly impressive move, but they will probably still be among the league’s strugglers and at 11/2 they look a big price to go down considering their woeful end to the previous campaign.
