England World Cup squad predictions: Could this 5/1 shot make the plane?

Content Editor at Free Super Tips, Alex was born in the shadow of Old Trafford and is an avid Man Utd fan. After graduating from university he combined his love of football, writing and betting to join FST and now closely follows goings-on in all of the top European leagues.
England were unimpressive in their final two friendlies before Thomas Tuchel selects his World Cup squad, and now attention will turn to the 26 men the German might choose to get on the plane to North America in the summer.
Harry Kane’s absence from proceedings was evident in both subpar performances against Uruguay and Japan and the bulk of Tuchel’s World Cup squad will likely be set in stone, but the dismal showings in those matches does open the door for some outsider picks to freshen things up.
Below, I’ve listed a few players who I feel offer some value in the betting market, with all prices quoted with bet365, where new customers can get up to £30 in free bets by signing up.
Adam Wharton at 4/5
Adam Wharton picked up an injury that ruled him out of the second friendly against Japan, but the Crystal Palace midfielder did relatively well in his second-half showing against Uruguay and remains a strong pick in the middle of the park.
The 22-year-old is an elite passer of the ball and has racked up five Premier League assists for Crystal Palace this season. He made the squad for Euro 2024 and has shown significant improvement since then, so he will be on Tuchel’s radar for this summer.
Ben White at 6/4
Ben White may have been booed onto the pitch against Uruguay, but the returning defender has clearly impressed Tuchel for him to ask him to come out of international retirement.
The Arsenal defender scored on his return to the national team before giving away a penalty at the other end, but White has been excellent for his club this season and his versatility could be of use in the World Cup, with the 28-year-old able to operate at centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield.
Aaron Ramsdale at 15/8
Nobody is getting between the England sticks ahead of Jordan Pickford, but Aaron Ramsdale could be a good option to back as the Three Lions’ third-choice goalkeeper.
Dean Henderson is expected to be second choice, and James Trafford started for England against Uruguay, but the 23-year-old’s lack of game time at Manchester City this season will be a concern, which could see the more experienced Ramsdale on the plane to North America.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin at 5/1
He may have missed a sitter on his return to the England fold, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks a massive price at 5/1 to make the squad.
He is one of only two English strikers to have scored double figures in the Premier League this season and his call-up for these friendlies suggests that he is one Tuchel is watching. Danny Welbeck is the only other English striker to net ten or more goals this season, and his absence from last week’s squad suggests that he is not in the fold.
His withdrawal from the squad before the Japan game was reportedly a pre-planned arrangement, so 5/1 for him to be a back-up to Kane appeals.
