Chesterfield to beat Mansfield
The EFL Cup takes second billing for most teams at this time of the year, but that will not be the case on the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border on Tuesday.
The Chesterfield-Mansfield rivalry is as intense as any in the lower divisions, and this meeting will be hotly anticipated as it is seven years since the pair locked horns.
The Spireites will be particularly keen and have opened the season well with wins over Barrow and Cheltenham, while the Stags have been sunk 2-1 twice by Burton and Doncaster in a poor start to the League One campaign.
Nigel Clough’s side look vulnerable for their trip over the county border and this is one game where punters can be assured that both teams will be going at it full throttle in what should be a charged atmosphere, with Chesterfield the more likely winners.

Millwall to win to nil vs Newport
Millwall impressed in last weekend’s 2-1 win at Norwich and the Lions look set for a good campaign. Alex Neil’s men were clearly the better side at Carrow Road, and while it’s possible the Scottish gaffer may shake up his side for Tuesday night’s trip to Newport, that is unlikely to stop the south Londoners progressing to the next round.
Newport won 2-1 at Crawley on Saturday, but the Exiles scored two goals from only three shots and they hit only one effort on target in their opening League Two contest against Notts County.
Clearly, David Hughes will have been delighted to collect four points from those two matches, but the results have outstripped the performances and Millwall look huge value to win to nil.

Birmingham to beat Sheffield United
Birmingham were highly unfortunate not to get an opening night win over Ipswich in the Championship and they should be feeling confident as Sheffield United come to St Andrew’s.
Blues’ head coach Chris Davies talked positively despite a late penalty denying them their win, as he reflected on the promoted side having maintained their identity against one of the sides likely to be in the promotion race alongside them. Summer signing Kyogo Furuhashi looked menacing throughout.
Sheffield United, beaten in the playoff final last season, saw their defence ripped open in a 4-1 loss to Bristol City and more misery could await the Blades.
Aidan Perkins
West Brom to beat Derby
West Brom got off to a winning start in the Championship when they got the better of Blackburn at home on Saturday, winning 1-0, and the Baggies can follow up against Derby in the EFL Cup.
New boss Ryan Mason said they were well worthy of victory over Rovers and even though he’ll make changes, the hosts can secure back-to-back home wins at this very early stage of the season.
Derby, on the other hand, went in front in their league-opener at Stoke and were heading for at least a point before two injury-time goals cost them in a painful 3-1 defeat. John Eustace is also expected to delve into his squad for Tuesday’s tie but the visitors could find it difficult at the Hawthorns.

Charlton to beat Stevenage
Charlton’s rise under Nathan Jones continued with a 1-0 victory over Watford at the weekend as they made a winning return to the Championship.
Jones has made Charlton hard to beat, which is a problem for a Stevenage side who have capitalised on the counter-attack in their opening two League One victories.
Jones has a solid cup record behind him. He took Charlton into the Third Round of the FA Cup last season, while he won four of six cup games with Southampton, including a run to the EFL Cup semis.
Jamie Griffith
Bolton to beat Sheffield Wednesday
With just 15 registered first-team players on their books, a midweek EFL Cup clash is the least of Sheffield Wednesday’s problems, and their small squad means the kids could take to the field at Bolton.
The game arrives just three days after their 2-1 defeat to Leicester, and the few players still knocking around are unlikely to be motivated enough to take down Wanderers.
Bolton lost 2-0 in their League One opener at Stockport but followed up with an impressive 2-0 victory over Plymouth. Those are solid results against two of the promotion favourites and Wanderers can see off a second-string Wednesday with ease.
Rob Eddy
Gillingham to beat AFC Wimbledon
Gillingham look value at nearly 2-1 to beat Wimbledon, given their strong recent head-to-head record at Priestfield.
Despite finishing 15 points behind these opponents last season, the Gills’ 1-0 home victory was their third on the bounce against the Dons, fighting for the top seven at the time, while they were 2-0 winners on the road the last time these two met in the League Cup in 2022.
The Gills boosted confidence with a 1-0 win over Walsall at the weekend, while only three Dons ‘ shots were on target against Lincoln, down to ten men in the 23rd minute, having mustered just two in total previously at Luton. Under 2.5 goals looks good too, with only one of the last ten meetings reaching three.
