Goals at both ends likely in Amsterdam

The Christian Chivu era at Inter has started in disappointing fashion with the inexperienced Romanian coach overseeing defeats in two of his first three Serie A fixtures at the helm, though Wednesday’s trip to the Netherlands could yield a better result.

Inter, who were beaten Champions League finalists in May, will be licking their wounds following successive defeats to Udinese (2-1) and Juventus (4-3), however, Chivu’s side did outperform their opponents in both games for expected goals and for total shots mustered, and the Nerrazzuri probably deserved more from each encounter.

Ajax meanwhile, have started well in the Netherlands and are unbeaten after five games in the Eredivisie, having made the most of a kind early run of fixtures. Their return of just one clean sheet from their last four assignments is a cause for concern however, and their defensive frailties could be exposed by Inter.

Ajax didn’t convince in Europe last season either, losing six of their last eight games in the Europa League before their elimination in the Round of 16, though they did have a knack for netting consolations and scored in four of those defeats.

Inter, who have scored nine times in three league skirmishes since August, should have the edge in terms of firepower in Amsterdam, especially with the in-form Marcus Thuram involved, though they can’t be backed to keep a clean sheet with any confidence, having conceded six times in their last two games.

With Ajax and Inter both showing signs of vulnerability in defensive areas, BTTS to land could be the best manoeuvre here, while backing the visitors to win 2-1 could be a snug fit for correct score bettors. Ajax conceded just shy of two goals per game in Europe last season and Inter’s superior class in forward areas should eventually tell.
