Tip Reasoning

  • Benfica have won seven of their nine Primeira Liga away games this season, covering a -1 handicap in five.
  • Arouca have lost four of their last five league games (Drawn 1) and conceded 15 goals in that run.
  • Arouca will be without suspended strikers Andre Silva and Oday Dabbagh, who have scored 41% of their league goals.

Absences for Arouca make them easy meat for Eagles

Benfica will be desperate not to let the gap to the top two grow any more when they face relegation-threatened and COVID-hit Arouca on Friday. Nelson Verissimo’s side dropped two points last weekend in a 1-1 home draw with Moreirense, despite creating enough chances to win comfortably with a final xG of 2.5.

They catch a break with the timing of this trip to the Estadio Municipal, though, as Arouca are down to the bare bones because of injuries, suspensions and international duty. The Arouquenses, who have failed to taste victory in any of their last five games, were hit by COVID too before their scheduled clash with Estoril last weekend.

Or Dosa and Gaston Matias Campi tested positive and, with veteran midfielder Marco Soares away at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations plus Andre Silva and Oday Dabbagh missing out through suspension after both seeing red against Belenenses last time out, the game was called off because they only had 11 fit players.

Hosts could capitulate quickly once resistance is broken

The absence of top scorer Dabbagh, who has been in good form, and Silva seriously reduces Arouca’s chances of landing a blow on Benfica here and a win to nil could well be on the cards.

The hosts have conceded 15 goals since their last win – a 2-1 home victory over Boavista in November – and will surely put everyone behind the ball in a bid to frustrate the Eagles in the same manner which earned Moreirense their point at the Luz.

But, once breached, Arouca have a tendency to capitulate quickly – as has been witnessed in their 4-1 loss to Vizela and 6-0 mauling by Braga of late, so we are of a mind to back Benfica -1 on the handicap.
