Atlanta United vs Philadelphia Union Predictions

  • Philadelphia Union have kept a clean sheet in each of their five competitive away games in 2021.
  • Both teams have not scored in six of Atlanta United’s last ten home games and Philadelphia’s last three away contests.
  • One or both teams have failed to score in three of the last four head-to-head meetings.

Five Stripes could come unstuck against familiar foes

Atlanta United will be looking to extend their unbeaten home record in the MLS when they host Philadelphia Union at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Union are familiar foes to Gabriel Heinze’s men after they knocked the Five Stripes out of the Concacaf Champions League earlier this season, doing all the damage in the first leg at Atlanta’s home.

Philadelphia have been excellent on the road this year, winning all but one of their five games and keeping clean sheets on every occasion, and they will make it tough for Atlanta to break them down on Sunday.

Both sides will be forced into changes as the Copa America has taken Venezuelan internationals from each, although talismanic striker Josef Martinez would seem to be a bigger miss to Atlanta than the absence of defensive midfielder Jose Martinez to the Union.

The missing men make this one awkward to predict, although with two pretty solid defences on show there is scope to take Under 2.5 in the goals market.

Our preference, however, is to back Both Teams to score – No because three of the past four meetings have seen one or the other side blanked and the Union are yet to concede on their travels this season.

A 1-0 away win is predicted here because Heinze is likely to be forced into a bigger tactical switch than Union coach Jim Curtin, who has already tried out a different line-up in his midfield during the 3-0 win over Portland last time out.
