Santos vs Atletico Go Predictions

  • Managerless Santos have seen both teams score in eight of their last nine games.
  • Atletico Goianiense, meanwhile, have seen goals at both ends in seven of their last eight matches.
  • The visitors have the joint-fourth worst defence in Serie A, shipping 21 goals in their 15 outings in 2022.

Interim Santos boss looking for immediate impact

Santos dispensed with the services of head coach Fabian Bustos this week after just five months at the helm, with one of Brazil’s most storied clubs sitting 10th in Serie A and exiting the Copa Sudamericana after winning just one of their last 12 games. Santos have only kept one clean sheet in that time, and they may struggle to do so when Atletico Goianiense visit on Sunday.

Caretaker Marcelo Fernandes will now take charge of Santos for a seventh spell, having managed a win rate of 40 per cent or lower in five of those tenures, including in four months as the full-time boss in 2015. Santos’ 19 goals for this term is bettered only by six Serie A sides, but their failure to keep clean sheets has been costly, with no shutouts in their last six home games.

Atletico Goianiense have not lost to Santos in Serie A since 2017, but will have to sharpen up their own dire defensive record to ensure they end that run here. Jorginho has overseen somewhat of a revival since taking charge in May, winning five of 12 games at the helm, but they have seen both teams score in seven of their last eight matches, including a Sudamericana loss to Paraguay’s Olimpia and a 4-2 defeat by Palmeiras.

Goals at both ends the safest play

Given Santos have seen both teams score in eight of their last nine games, punters are best advised to ignore the results markets for a clash between two unpredictable, out-of-shape teams, and back goals at both ends.

Meanwhile, Santos’ quality could shine through in a 2-1 home win; they’ve actually only lost one of their last nine games, being blighted by a series of draws, but Fernandes has his work cut out to steady the ship.
