Tip Reasoning

  • Atletico Mineiro have won five of their last seven home Serie A games.
  • Sao Paulo have lost four of their last six in Serie A

Rooster can make early noise against fading Tricolor

Atletico Mineiro face Sao Paulo in the third round of Brazil’s Serie A on Sunday.

Rooster bounced back from their home defeat to Fortaleza in the opening round with a 1-0 win at Sport Recife last time out.

But don’t be fooled because Cuca’s team are nowhere near at the levels they consistently displayed in finishing third last season.

The hosts look set to be without a raft of players against Tricolor due to international commitments with Junior Alonso, Alan Franco. Eduardo Vargas and Savarino all at the Copa America.

Guilherme Arana and Guga will be available after returning from duty in Europe with the Brazil Olympic squad but what shape they are in is questionable.

And reports also suggest that the Alvinegro are refusing to pay the fee that would allow on-loan midfielder Tchê Tchê to play against his parent club.

Sao Paulo, who will be boosted by the return of Igor Liziero, are yet to score in two rounds of league play but produced one of the Brazilian cup’s biggest routs in beating Fourth of July 9-1 in midweek.

They have two days more rest than Atletico ahead of this game and may appear a tempting price to win on the road.

However, they have been very susceptible to set pieces this season and saw two errors punished by Atletico Goianiense in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat so are best left alone in the 90 minutes betting.

Instead we think the hosts to win in the half-time – full-time betting is worth a play because of Rooster’s recent trend of grabbing the first goal – and early.

Atletico have scored the first goal in their last seven Serie A away games – leading at HT in four of those – while Sao Paulo have conceded the opener in their last six league aways – trailing at the break four times.

Sao Paulo have scored only once in their last four visits to Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto so as a correct score play we like the look of 2-0.
