Tip Reasoning

  • AZ scored at least twice in each of their last five domestic matches.
  • AZ average 2.9 scored goals per home league game this season.
  • Groningen conceded 2.2 goals per away league match this season.
  • Groningen conceded at least twice in six of their last nine away games.

Amazing AZ to continue fine festive form

After a tepid start to the campaign which saw AZ Alkmaar occupy as low as 11th place in earlier stages, they finally broke back into the top-seven with a fourth straight league win. That was their sixth straight competitive win, their longest winning run in competitive games since November 2019.

Given their red-hot form, the ‘Cheese Heads’ are expected to turn in a mature performance here at the AFAS Stadion, albeit without the support of the Alkmaar faithful due to fresh lockdown restrictions.

However, they have now scored at least twice in eight of their last 12 games and will be expected to gift their absent fans with at least a couple more here as they seek to consolidate their European credentials ahead of the winter break.

Groningen should give a strong showing

The visitors have picked up three of their four league wins, 65% of their goals scored and 63% of their points away from home this term. Even so, they come up against the league’s most in-form side across the last five rounds and may find this much tougher than their usual assignments.

Even though Groningen perform better away from home, they have still leaked over two goals per away league game on average this season and as such, I predict that the hosts will score at least twice.

I predict an entertaining 3-1 home victory, though I think the value is best found in the team goals market as Groningen can be plucky, evidenced by their manager’s unbeaten record against AZ boss Pascal Jansen (W2, D1).
