AZ Alkmaar vs Groningen Predictions
- FC Groningen have failed to win 12 of their last 13 Eredivisie matches.
- AZ Alkmaar are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 league games.
- Groningen have conceded 13 times across their last four away league games.
The Cheese Heads can churn out a win
Relegation-threatened Groningen will be buoyed by the fact AZ had a midweek trip to Lazio to content with, although Pascal Jansen’s men may well have earned a great deal of confidence from their 2-1 comeback win over the Italian giants.
Heading into this round just five points off the top, AZ know they’re still in the title race at the business end of the season. Moreover, half of AZ’s home league wins this season came by multi-goal margins, so don’t expect them to take their foot off the pedal should they edge ahead.
On the other hand, Groningen find themselves just one point above the foot of the table ahead of this round and have looked even worse on their travels, where they have conceded 13 times across the last four Eredivisie trips.
Stick with AZ
This Groningen side certainly aren’t the force of old, and it’s difficult to make a case for them improving on their dire away league record (W1, D2, L9) at the home of title hopefuls AZ.
That’s not to mention the fact that four of Groningen’s six multi-goal league defeats this season came on their travels, so this could be yet another tough afternoon for the Pride of the North.
There’s simply no value in backing AZ in the win-draw-win market, so we’re taking them to win by a -1 handicap-busting scoreline. To round out our selections, we’re going for a small stakes play on a 3-0 home win.
