AZ can end Noah’s European arc

Noah claimed a surprise 1-0 win over AZ in the first leg of their Conference League play-off but will need to be on top form to get the result they need in the Netherlands to progress on Thursday.

The Armenian side were worthy winners last week after what was a fairly even 90 minutes, but AZ are a stronger side on home soil.

The Eredivisie side have lost just one of their last 10 at home across all competitions and they’ve only lost twice at AFAS Stadion all season.

Noah did claim two draws on the road in the league phase, losing the other trip, but in general their road form has been poor with just one win in their last seven trips.

AZ are the clear favourites and the best angle here could be backing a home win with goals at both ends. Noah scored in the first leg and managed goals at Aberdeen and at Craiova in Romania during the league phase, and AZ have gone five games without a home clean sheet.

AZ need to win by a two-goal margin to avoid extra time and they may not be able to get the job done inside 90 minutes, with a 3-1 home win looking a decent correct score option. Noah’s focus will be on defence and they are unlikely to take too many risks even if they are one goal behind, and they’ve only suffered one defeat by more than one goal in their last 18 competitive games.

With home advantage, AZ should be able to put an end to Noah’s European dreams but they may need extra time to get a win over the line on Thursday.
