Barnsley vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

  • No team in the Championship has conceded as many home goals as Barnsley during the current campaign.
  • Sheffield Wednesday are currently the highest scoring away team in the Championship.
  • Sheffield Wednesday have scored two or more in four of their six away games in the league.

Tykes struggling

When they went five games unbeaten around the turn of the year, Barnsley looked to have a fighting chance of getting themselves out of trouble, though so far, 2020 has not been their year. Winners of just one of their last five, four of which they’ve lost, Gerhard Struber’s men now find themselves seven points from safety.

At home, things haven’t been too bad of late, though Barnsley continue to concede goals left, right and centre. The half-way point of the campaign has come and gone, and Saturday’s hosts have still only kept one clean sheet at home, while they’re without a shutout at Oakwell since the opening day of the season. Not only have Struber’s side conceded in each of their last 14 home games, but they’ve shipped two or more in nine of those 14.

New recruits to lift visitors

While Barnsley have conceded lots at home, Sheffield Wednesday have been free scoring on the road, notching no less than 26 goals in 15 travelling matches. That total makes them the highest scoring away team in the division.

From a defensive point of view, Wednesday’s haven’t been amazing, at least in terms of keeping teams out, as two clean sheets in their last 11 suggest, but they’ve certainly done the business going forward, scoring in each of their last nine on the road, as well as in all but two of their 15 away games in total. During that time, they’ve notched two or more on seven occasions, including in four of their last six. Given that they’ve recently bolstered their attacking options by adding both Josh Windass and Connor Wickham, their scoring rate is unlikely to slow any time soon.

Visitors to thrive offensively

Given what we’ve seen from Wednesday on the road this term, a match at Oakwell can only be described as an opportunity for the Owls to do well offensively. Punters can profit by siding with ‘Sheffield Wednesday to Score Over 1.5 Goals’. The visitors have recently scored multiple goals away against better teams than the Tykes, including promotion hopefuls Forest and Leeds, while they also rank highly in terms of both shots and shots on target for. Wednesday are the third-best Championship team in terms of shots on target for away from home and the second-best in terms of shots for. Visiting goals appeal ever more so when we add in the fact that Barnsley have regularly shipped multiple goals at home, alongside the fact that they’re the second-worst Championship side in terms of shots on target conceded at home.
