Tip Reasoning

This is almost certainly the biggest game of the season so far for both Birmingham and Burton. The Midlands pair are both outside the drop-zone but if either side loses this, they’ll be in big trouble with only 3 games to play. The bookies make Blues the clear favourites but nothing about them suggests you could confidently back them and the battling Brewers should be able to get a result.

Birmingham are 4 points above the relegation zone with 4 games to play, which may not sound like a terrible scenario, but when you consider they’ve been sinking like a rock for several months now and have 3 tough games to come after this one, they really need to win this game. The problem though is they seem to have forgotten how to win. They’ve won just twice in 23 matches under Zola. On Good Friday they failed to beat a Rotherham side that had taken just 1 point from their previous 15 matches.

The importance of this game should ensure they receive good backing here, initially at least, but if things don’t go Birmingham’s way, it could spill over into frustration at the huge regression that has taken place since Zola replaced Rowett earlier in the campaign. Burton will only thrive off that but they also come into the game following a disappointing result when they lost 2-1 at home to Ipswich.

The Brewers though have put in some excellent away performances in recent weeks. They’ve only lost 1 of their last 5 on the road and that was a narrow defeat at high-flying Newcastle. They’ve only conceded 2 goals in their last 5 away games and when you consider 4 of those matches were against sides currently in the top six, that is an outstanding record to have at such a key time in the season. It also suggests a Birmingham side that averages just 1 goal per game this term will find it tough to break them down.

These are two of the four lowest scoring sides in the league, so it’s likely to be a tight contest and it’s hard to make a strong case for Birmingham who have won just 1 of their 11 home games under Zola and have taken only 1 point from the last 5. That makes backing Double Chance – Burton or Draw at 7/10 look really good here.
