Blues can make Coventry forget their fearless Fulham win

Coventry can look to build on last weekend’s stunning victory over Fulham when they hit the road again to face their former landlords Birmingham City at St Andrew’s. The Sky Blues’ 3-1 success at Craven Cottage keeps them just about in the conversation for the playoffs, but the inconsistent nature of their away form suggests they won’t be able to reproduce those levels again so easily.

Mark Robins’ side haven’t won back-to-back away games all season, in fact – apart from when they won twice in three away trips back in February, their road victories have generally been about two months apart. Although it’s been a dismal season, Birmingham have lost only eight of 20 games at St Andrew’s and won’t play anything like the same way as Fulham did.

Whereas Marco Silva’s side push the full backs forward and gamble by leaving space in behind, the Blues are going to string five across the back out of possession and have three tenacious midfielders that will scrap for every second ball. In truth, it hasn’t brought them much success of late, but Lee Bowyer’s team don’t concede many cheap goals.

Bowyer’s team are tough to score against – and watch

Birmingham City have conceded fewer than two goals in four of their last six Championship contests, suggesting the approach has made them tougher to beat. They also haven’t scored more than once in their last five games, so there’s a price to pay at the other end.

We feel this matchup doesn’t suit Coventry’s style as Birmingham will congest the middle of the park where they like to focus their attacking play. Therefore, some sort of stalemate might ensue and lead to a disappointing spectacle.

Hence, our preferred bet option here is to play Under 2.5 goals – which would have landed in the last five Birmingham matches and three of Coventry’s last five too. The Sky Blues have scored fewer than two goals in five of their last eight away league games so we are leaning towards a 1-1 correct score play here also.
