      Birmingham vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

These are the two clubs directly below the top six currently so it’s an important match in the season of both sides given they may end up competing with each other for the final play-off spot. They are level on points currently and it could be that both managers look at this as a match they’d rather not lose rather than one they are desperate to go out and win.

Sheffield Wednesday had much the better of things when the sides met at Hillsborough on Boxing Day. The Owls ran out 3-0 winners but it should be much tighter at St Andrews. Birmingham are unbeaten in the league since then winning 4 of their 6 matches so come in to this game in good form.

They’ve also won their last 4 matches at St Andrews in the Championship having only won 3 times at home all season prior to that. The Owls won 4 of their 5 subsequent matches following their win over the Blues but are winless in 3 matches coming in to this after league draws against Burnley and Reading and a surprise FA Cup defeat at Shrewsbury.

The importance of this game is likely to lead to a fairly cautious game at least in the early stages. Despite Birmingham’s 3-0 win over Ipswich in their last home game, there aren’t normally many goals at St Andrews. There have been 2 or fewer goals in 8 of their last 11 home games in the Championship and there have been 2 or fewer goals in all of the last 3 away league games for Wednesday.

Therefore backing there to be under 2.5 goals in this match at 7/10 could be a smart move here.

Birmingham are slight favourites given their recent good form and home advantage but Sheffield Wednesday have only lost 3 of their last 22 league matches and they are prone to drawing quite a few matches. Their last two away Championship games have finished 1-1 and this could be another one and can be backed at 5/1.
